Salomon Cross Multi 28" Leggings

Best running / hiking hybrid

Expert rating:
3.5

When we first unsheathed these leggings from the packet, we couldn’t believe how buttery soft they were. They’re made of a recycled polyester and elastane mix, with a brushed, velvety feel for all-day comfort, and honestly, it feels like you’re not even wearing anything when they’re on. The waistband isn’t as defined and deep as some of the other pairs we had on test, but still manages to be flattering and comfortable, staying put on a 15km hike, and a 10km bike ride in early spring.

These leggings weigh in at just 167g, so when it comes to features, they’re understandably light. There is a key pocket in the back, but other than that, there’s little else: no side pocket for other gubbins such as a phone or a snack.

This minimalism, however, is offset by the Cross Multi 28”’s excellent quick-drying abilities - they’re the fastest drying leggings we had on test, which gives peace of mind for drizzly showers or river crossings - they dry so fast they don’t chafe or weigh you down at all. They’re also a great thing to stash in your pack as clean, dry gear for tent-lounging, or as an emergency layer seeing as they pack down so small.

The only other downsides we’d say is that these are too thin to be useful as a standalone hiking legging for the colder end of the year, and the light colour we chose does show up marks very quickly (chain-ring tats for us mostly) - but luckily these are also available in a darker green, and in black too.

The Rab Talus leggings are true to size, flattering, and contour the body perfectly. They form a snug fit, thanks largely to the flexible yet supportive soft material, allowing for free movement while running mountains and trails - exactly as they are designed for.

Not only do the Talus feel nice and light, but they also effectively wick moisture and dry quickly, even in damp conditions. The high-wear areas are reinforced, which works well. For instance, I once had a fall where I cut my knee, but the tights remained intact. This proves their flexibility and breathability since the low-wear areas are made of thinner material. Another plus, the Talus is also squat-proof, in other words, not see-through.

They offer great functionality with two thigh stash pockets and a waist zip pocket, providing a brilliant amount of storage. The high waistband with a thin drawstring has to be knotted since it is just a loop with no ends, supposedly to avoid losing the end of a drawstring. Regardless of drawcord, the leggings held in place well.

The Talus has some small reflective details, with one on the waistband that might be hidden by a long top or jacket. Unfortunately, the care label inside the leggings on the right leg caused some irritation on my skin as I ran. However, apart from that, the seams were comfortable.

In addition to their performance, Rab is climate neutral, so you can invest in their gear without any environmental guilt. What’s more, Rab also prioritises sustainability by using more recycled materials and eliminating the use of fluorocarbons.

Ronhill Tech X-Tights

Best for weather protection

Ronhill Tech X leggings

www.sportsshoes.com

These Tech X Tights from Ronhill provide a good fit with generous leg length. A high, thin waistband with drawstring allows them to sit comfortably and the overall look is flattering. We like the sleek black colourways, too. There’s also one waist pocket for stashing a key or gels, but it’s not large enough for a phone.

These running tights are designed to provide an extra injection of weather protection than your run of the mill leggings. We’re talking reflective detailing to boost visibility, and a brushed inner to retain heat, all of which kept us cosy in the cold.

After several miles in the rain, we did find that rain started to seep through. It’s worth bearing in mind that while there’s some water protection here, these tights are not fully waterproof.

Pros

  • High-waisted with added security of a drawstring
  • Cosy, breathable material that holds its shape and stays in place
  • Reflective detail

Cons

  • One pocket that doesnt fit a phone
  • Gets wet and stays wet
  • Bobbling after one wear
